Top Tips!

  • These are just a few ideas to get you started.  You can adapt these suggestions or dream up a completely original theme of your own.
  • Limit your fruit salad to 1 or 2 colours.  You will be surprised when you do this how many fruits you can find that are just green, or just red, or just white etc.
  • OR Limit your fruit salad to a country or region such as tropical fruits only,  or English fruits only
  • OR Limit your fruit salad to fruits from one group such as citrus fruits only (eg oranges, grapefruit, lime, kumquats),  or berries only (grapes, strawberries, blueberries),  or tree fruits only (peaches, apples, pears, cherries)
  • OR Create a decorative fruit platter.  Slice and prepare your choice of fruits in different shapes and thicknesses.  Some can be sliced thinly and fanned,  others can be  cut into sticks or chunks, etc  Arrange them in an attractive design on a platter.
  • OR Finger-fruit-in-a-tub for a picnic:  cut fruit into finger-size pieces so thecan be eaten in the fingers without making a mess.  Arrange them attractively in a portable tub suitable for packing with a picnic.

And for any of the above:

Edible Decorations: presentation is incredibly important with food.  If it looks beautiful,  people are much more likely to be tempted to eat it!

Suitable decorations for your Themed Fruit Salad could include fanned fruit slices (eg orange, apple, strawberry, kiwi, lime etc),  sprigs of herbs such as fresh mint or basil leaves, or even edible flowers (eg rose petals, lavender, pansy, geranium, elderflower, violets etc)  -  as long as  they have not been sprayed with any chemicals.  Always ask a knowledgeable adult before using any flowers in cooking, to make sure they are suitable for eating.
